I was thinking, a LAN configuration with a backup server that has external Terrabyte drives and backup to be facilitated by Genie-Soft backup software..?

Depending on size, you probably want to do a backup to disk first, and then run a backup to tape job on that data. I use Veritas and I have a daily backup to a 1TB array and then a tape backup is run. You can have it on your main network, or you can install secondary network cards to create a private backup network.
